X-rings

X-rings are often used for the same applications as O-rings. When purchasing an X-ring, you always need to consider the dimensions and the material used for the product. X-rings are sometimes called quad rings, after the brand name used by Minnesota Rubber.

X-ring design

Although O-rings are frequently used in static applications, they are not always the right choice for dynamic systems. Movement can cause an O-ring to twist, leading to leakage. An X-ring is a better choice in such cases.

The X-shaped cross-section ensures that the ring remains firmly in place, even in dynamic applications. This is because the X shape creates at least four sealing surfaces. There is also adequate space for lubricant between the lobes of the X, which is beneficial for dynamic seals.

If the installation dimensions permit, a shaft seal, such as a double lip oil seal or a hydraulic/pneumatic seal, is a better option for moving systems.

X-ring dimensions

You determine which size is suitable for your application based on the dimensions of the groove where you intend to mount the X-ring. For dynamic applications, you should choose the thickest possible X-ring. Thanks to the X cross-section, there is less friction resistance - which in turn extends the service life of the seal.

The dimensions of our X-rings generally comply with international standards, specifically AS568, BS1806, ISO3601 and French R.

X-ring materials

Different materials are used for the production of X-rings: NBR, EPDM and FKM. These materials are the basis for a compound; a recipe of different material components that results in a unique set of properties.

It is important to ensure that the material used for your X-ring is suitable for the conditions under which it will be used. So you should always consider the medium, the temperature, the pressure and the uptime. A brief summary of the different materials and their properties is included below.

  • NBR X-rings

Most X-rings are made of NBR, or nitrile. This rubber is suitable for sealing lubricating oils or hydraulic oils. NBR is not very resistant to ageing, extremely high temperatures (above +120°C) or UV radiation.

  • EPDM X-rings

EPDM X-rings are highly suitable for media with hot water and steam. All EPDM X-rings can withstand low temperatures (down to -50°C) and are resistant to ageing and UV radiation. Some compounds can also withstand higher temperatures (up to +150°C).

  • FKM X-rings

An FKM X-ring is the best solution for applications that involve extremely high temperatures. This material is capable of withstanding temperatures up to +200°C. Furthermore, all compounds offer good resistance to strong acids and bases, but not to hot water or steam. Only a few types can withstand low temperatures (down to -40°C).
